The Kettle Creek Conservation Authority (KCCA) has issued a Watershed Conditions Statement—Flood Outlook, warning residents to be cautious near creeks and streams as significant rainfall is expected this weekend.
Environment Canada is tracking a low-pressure system set to arrive Saturday morning, with forecasts predicting 20-40mm of rain by Sunday night. Thunderstorms could bring even higher localized amounts.
With the ground still frozen, runoff is expected to increase, raising water levels in local waterways and heightening the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and floodplains.
Parents and guardians are urged to keep children away from fast-moving, frigid water and unstable banks.
While KCCA field observations show normal water levels and mostly ice-free conditions along Kettle Creek to Lake Erie, conditions can change quickly. Residents are advised to monitor local conditions, move property from flood-prone areas, and clear debris from storm drains to prevent backups.
Currently, wind speeds and lake levels aren’t expected to cause storm surge in Port Stanley, but residents are encouraged to stay alert.
KCCA will continue to monitor conditions, with the outlook in effect until 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 17th.
