Residents in municipalities served by the Elgin Area Primary Water Supply System (EAPWSS) may notice a change in the taste or smell of their tap water due to shifting conditions in Lake Erie.
On March 6, plant operators detected a significant change in raw water quality, linked to melting ice, wind, rain, and spring runoff. In response, the treatment plant adjusted operations and activated the powdered carbon system to help control taste and odour.
Despite the changes, the treated water remains safe and meets Ontario’s water quality standards. Officials are closely monitoring conditions and working with nearby water systems to stay ahead of any developments.
Residents with questions can contact their local municipality for more information.
EAPWSS supplies drinking water to approximately 138,000 people in the municipalities of Bayham, Central Elgin, Dutton Dunwich, Malahide and Southwold, as well as the Town of Aylmer and the cities of St. Thomas and London.
