This is the President’s Club, brought to you by Briwood Farm Market.
For Tom Marks, Lord Elgin Branch 41, Royal Canadian Legion is a family affair.
“My grandmother was probably a charter member and I have a couple of aunts and uncles who were past presidents and I’ve been on the executive for a couple of years now.
As its anniversary approaches, the city’s Legion branch will celebrate 99 years in St. Thomas.
While members contribute to the community on many fronts, the highlight of the year remains the Service of Remembrance each November 11.
And, as Marks reminds, preparations for that service begin in September.
“Again this year, we were very successful in raising funds for the veterans. Our veterans are getting very old now.
“The Korean War vets are in their 90s and there are very few of them.”
With their fundraising efforts, the focus in on youth activities and sports.
But there is another side to the Legion branch, stresses Marks.
Their John Street home is a social hub with several dart leagues, card nights a meat draw every Saturday and their Catch the Ace promotion.
The latter saw over $36,000 awarded as a prize.
“We cater to a lot of seniors and it’s a weekly gathering. It’s fellowship and they are looking out for each other. It’s all good things.
“They look after each other. If someone is not there for a week or two, they will call and find out if everything is alright.”
Marks sums up the social aspect of the Legion by observing, “It’s a good outreach program.”
