This is the President’s Club, brought to you by Briwood Farm Market.
The Rotary Club of St. Thomas was chartered in 1950 and this year celebrates its 75th anniversary. The city actually has two Rotary Clubs, with the other being the Railway City Rotary Club.
Rotary International is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in their own communities and around the world.
Rotary Club of St. Thomas President Mark Holmes explains members volunteer at Grace Cafe and Harvest Hands, a nonprofit food distribution bank dedicated to ‘rescuing’ food in the region to help agencies and families throughout Southwestern Ontario.
Holmes pointed out that their club donates about $45,000 into the community each year. He adds, “A big part of what we do is we have an Interact Club, where youth in the community volunteer in a number of different ways under the leadership of a phenomenal lady, Trudy Kanellis.”
It’s a service club for young people between the ages of 12 to 18 with the members challenged to take on at least two projects throughout the year, one of which should have an international component.
Homes got involved with the Rotary Club of St. Thomas when he moved to London from the Niagara region in 2018. With five clubs in London, Holmes found that situation a little confusion and St. Thomas came out the winner this year under his leadership.
