The London region’s population surged at an impressive pace in 2024, continuing its recent trend of rapid growth, but a slowdown may be on the horizon.
Statistics Canada estimates show the London metropolitan area which includes Strathroy, St. Thomas, and parts of Elgin and Middlesex counties gained more than 19,000 residents between July 1, 2023, and July 1, 2024.
However, the housing affordability crisis is expected to temper future growth in the region.
In 2024, the region experienced a net loss of 800 people to other parts of Canada.
Of those who moved into the London census metropolitan area during the year, about 16,000 settled directly in the city.
This growth represents a 3.2 percent year-over-year increase, outpacing Canada’s national growth rate of three percent.
