Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is alerting the public about a new type of scam involving fake traffic violation notices.
Recently, residents have reported receiving text messages claiming to be from the Ontario Government about traffic violations. Fraudsters appear to be exploiting the growing use of Photo Radar and Automated Speed Enforcement systems to deceive people.
OPP reminds everyone that if you are ticketed for speeding by these devices, you will never receive a text message. Legitimate tickets are sent by mail to the vehicle owner’s registered address, along with details of the infraction and the penalty.
As fraud schemes become more advanced, the OPP urges the public to take their time and verify any information before responding to messages or sharing personal details.
If you receive suspicious messages or believe you have been targeted by fraud, contact your local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
