London’s unemployment rate saw a slight decline in September, thanks to modest job gains that ended a three-month trend of losses.
The London area, which includes St. Thomas and parts of Elgin and Middlesex counties, added 700 new jobs last month, according to Statistics Canada’s report on Friday.
This increase brought the region’s unemployment rate down to 6.4 percent, compared to 6.5 percent in August.
Although the gain is small, it marks the first positive development for the local labor market in months.
The area had previously lost around 7,300 jobs over the summer and has had an unemployment rate of six percent or higher since the beginning of the year.
