On Sept. 11, 2001, 343 members of the New York City Fire Department and 71 law enforcement officers died in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and on the ground in New York City.
Wednesday morning, a commemorative service was held at the main St. Thomas fire hall on Wellington street, presided over by Pastor Al Stone.
Elgin-Middlesex-London MP Karen Vecchio thanked the emergency personnel for keeping the community safe.
St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston referred to the annual service of remembrance as, “an incredible moment every September.”
St. Thomas Fire Chief Dave Gregory said collectively, “we make this city safer and stronger every day.
The service was organized by the St. Thomas Professional Fire Fighters Association and president Daryl Smith talked about the stress emergency personnel face at work.
