TSN is reporting that Joe Thornton will join Calgary Flames assistant GM, Brad Pascall in handling of management duties and the assembly of Canada’s roster for the 2023 Spengler Cup.
This comes after the St. Thomas native announced his retirement from the National Hockey League just this past Saturday after a 24-year career.
Thornton, who was selected first overall by the Bruins in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, went on to play 7 seasons with the club before signing a contact with the Sharks that would see him remain in San Jose for 15 seasons.
Following a 1 year stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs, “Jumbo Joe” signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with the Florida Panthers, which turned out to be his final season in the NHL.
He played in a total of 1,714 games, scoring 430 goals and registering 1,539 career points.
At the time of his retirement, Thornton sits 12th in league history in total points scored, 7th in assists, and 6th in games played.
