The St. Thomas Police Service is experiencing a significant increase this year in calls requiring a response.
And a 24-hour period ending 6 a.m. last Thursday illustrates the uptick with 65 incidents reported in that time span.
To date, there has been an 11 per cent increase in the number of incidents over last year with 16,368 recorded as of Sept. 14 compared to 14,786 on the same date in 2022.
This increase in 2023 bucks a trend set over the past three years where service calls steadily declined.
- 2022: 20,682 incidents
- 2021: 21,924 incidents
- 2020: 22,173 incidents
If the calls for service continue at this pace, it would be a record-breaking year for incidents, according to a police media release.
The release cautions, “With incidents on the rise, there are direct links to increased pressures on all areas of our police service.”
