The St. Thomas Stars announce Dave Matsos as the organization’s new head coach.
St. Thomas native Matsos has an extensive coaching history including 11 years in the Ontario Hockey League, where he spent four seasons as head coach of the Sudbury Wolves and Hamilton Bulldogs as well as seven seasons as an assistant/associate coach between Windsor and Hamilton.
He has spent the last two seasons with the London Nationals of the GOJHL. Prior to his time in the OHL, Matsos spent five years coaching professionally in Europe.
He has also represented Canada as an Assistant Coach in both the U17 tournament and the Canada-Russia series.
Matsos brings a history of success to the Stars, being a three-time OHL champion (playing and coaching), a Memorial Cup champion as a player, a five-time Elite League champion, and a two-time challenge cup champion in Europe.
He was head coach for the winning GOJHL team at the 2023 MacPherson tournament.
“We are thrilled to bring in someone of Dave’s pedigree to lead this group of young athletes,” said Stars’ new GM Paul Gibson.
“His preparation, the way he thinks the game and the ability to teach and relate to the players were the attributes that made Dave so attractive to help excel this program.”
The remainder of the Stars coaching staff will be announced in the coming days.
