Thanks to her community involvement and a high level of academic performance, a St. Thomas teen is the recipient of a $2,000 Libro Credit Union award.
Tonianne Mayer is heading off to Toronto Metropolitan University next fall to begin her architectural studies and she admits the award will relieve some of the financial stress.
Mayer took a year off after graduating from St. Joseph’s High School to work in London, England and help save for her post-secondary school education.
Her love of math and problem solving pointed Tonianne Mayer in the direction of architectural studies.
She explains why architecture is a logical career path.
Mayer was one of eight area students who are recipients of this year’s award which recognizes outstanding leadership, commitment and volunteering efforts in the community along with a high level of academic performance.
She admits a one-year break after graduating from St. Joseph’s High School was exactly what she needed. She spent the year working in London, England and now she’s ready to move on to university in Toronto.
Mayer was born in China but raised in St. Thomas and spent six years with the 741 Air Cadet Squadron.
While at university in Toronto, Mayer hopes to take advantage of co-op experiences to help in fine-tuning her career path.
For young people uncertain about which career path to follow, Mayer says follow your dreams. And, she is a strong advocate of the air cadet program because of its leadership opportunities.
