In spite of being badly outshot in the opening 20 minutes of play Friday evening at the Joe Thornton Community Centre, the Leamington Flyers potted a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes and then hung on for a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the St. Thomas Stars.
It was was the second time in 24 hours the Flyers managed to double up St. Thomas. Thursday night Leamington prevailed 4-2 on home ice.
St. Thomas outshot the visitors 24-14 in the first period but only had goals from the Flyers’ Gavin Grundner and Ryan MacPherson to show for it.
The Stars didn’t light up the scoreboard until the 12-minute mark of the final frame when Mathieu Paris beat Flyers’ netminder Boe Piroski.
It was the Ottawa native’s first goal of the campaign.
Owen Willmore was between the pipes for St. Thomas, kicking aside 44 shots.
The Flyers are now tied with the London Nationals atop the GOJHL standings.
St. Thomas remains in ninth place, two points in arrears of Sarnia.
They return to action against those same Legionnaires next Friday in a 7:30 p.m. start at the Joe Thornton Community Centre.
