Food science’s loss is definitely a gain for St. Thomas Public Library. CEO Heather Robinson began working as a page in the London Public Library system at the age of 14, but her career path nearly involved an abrupt turn when she headed off to university. It did not take her long to realize she may just be off course.
Robinson takes great pride in being able to introduce teen services to St. Thomas Public Library. The ability to grow it from the ground up. She says having the pleasure of working with teens “is awesome.”
A challenge today for libraries, notes Robinson, is adapting to rapid technological changes and dealing with the digital divide. Particularly as libraries have been impacted through the COVID-pandemic.
For a young person interested in library science as a career, Robinson has a simple piece of advice. “Come and talk to us,” she says. Librarians are not the stuffy, bookish individuals you may imagine.
