When 26 residents and two live-in staff were displaced after Southwestern Public Health shut down Walnut Manor due to health violations, it was volunteers from the Salvation Army St. Thomas Citadel who came to the rescue. Capt. Nyree Bond says it was a privilege to step up and attend to the needs of some of the most vulnerable individuals in the city.
From July 7 through the 12, the Salvation Army, with the help of several city restaurants, fed the residents and volunteers housed in the Doug Tarry Lounge at the Joe Thornton Centre. Capt. Bond explains the logistics of feeding three meals a day to more than 40 people some days.
Capt. Bond says working with the city and community agencies is a natural fit.
She adds the St. Thomas Citadel is “grateful for opportunities to serve our community.”
