As part of the city’s compassionate community strategy rolled out this week, St. Thomas has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Indwell Community Homes to develop supportive housing projects. Indwell is a Christian charity that has created affordable housing in several southern Ontario municipalities. St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston says the first joint project will be 16 micro-apartments in the downtown transit building.
Preston says Indwell will lease the micro apartments to be built on the second floor and provide day-to-day supports for the apartment tenants. The units are planned to be available by this September.
Graceview Enterprises of Belmont was awarded the contract for the $3 million project.
Indwell supports more than 700 individuals in London, Woodstock, Simcoe and Hamilton. Jeffrey Neven, Indwell executive director says, “Putting feet to its heart of compassion, the City of St. Thomas has shown exemplary and determined leadership with this plan . . . together we can end homelessness.”
