With nine members sitting on city council, is St. Thomas over-represented in the council chambers at city hall?
The question came up again Monday during discussion on whether the city should adopt a ward system of governance. Coun. Steve Peters says the matter needs to be debated further.
Coun. Mark Tinlin suggested with a ward system you might not need as many councillors.
The structure and size of council has surfaced on several occasions since 2003 when council of the day unanimously approved a motion calling for a full and independent review of council and its working relationships at city hall.
One of the recommendations of the McCarthy Tetrault Report of 2003 called for the reduction in size of council to seven members from eight, including the mayor.
Mayor Joe Preston advised the structure of council will be discussed at an upcoming reference committee meeting.
