Due to a prolonged period of hot weather that is expected today and through the rest of this week, Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for St. Thomas and Elgin County. Environment Canada reports that we will see daytime high temperatures in excess of 30 degrees Celsius, with humidex values in the high 30’s to low 40’s this week.
Overnight lows near 20 degrees Celsius are also expected through this period, providing little relief from the heat.
A slightly cooler airmass may move into the area this weekend, however there is considerable uncertainty.
Extreme heat affects everyone with risks being greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.
You are reminded that you can take advantage of cooling centres at 423 Talbot Street and the Talbot Teen Centre St. Thomas, as well as West Elgin at the Community Health Centre.
