The Provincial Government has announced just over $1.5 million in funding for the St. Thomas Police Service through a new grant. The Community Safety and Policing grant (CSP) will provide funding for the police’s corporate communications, traffic and a high school officers and a new street crimes officer that will be dedicated to human trafficking.
The CSP grant is part of the larger $195 million grant that will support police services across Ontario over the next 3 years.
Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek says that he’s proud to be able to announce funding that is going to support the frontline of policing.
Yurek says that the Provincial scope of the grant is investing in the frontlines of the police services in Ontario so they can have the necessary resources to do their jobs.
St. Thomas Police Chief Chris Herridge says that while they do not have an issue with human trafficking currently this investment will help them ensure it doesn’t come into the community.
Herridge says that they will also be launching a human trafficking public awareness campaign to increase the public’s knowledge on the issue.
