A new business in St. Thomas is one of the drop off locations for a new project that sees plastics turned into sleeping mats for the homeless. The Butterfly Medium located at 27 Southwick Street will be collecting any single use plastic bags on behalf of Jen Werry who will be turning the bags into mats.
Werry says the idea came from browsing Facebook and she decided it was something she could do.
Werry who resides in Strathroy has reached as far as our city of St. Thomas with this new project. Werry says that her local Superstore and Walmart have also agreed to a weekly drop-off of single-use plastics, and even the Green Party of Ontario has reached out to her.
She estimates the creation of one mat takes about 5 to 6 hours to complete so Werry is now actively recruiting volunteers. To donate some time or to find out more, contact Jen Stratton-Werry or Shannon Shepley on Facebook.
