According to Unifor, GM has informed Local 88 which represents workers at the CAMI plant in Ingersoll that temporary layoffs are on the way starting this week.
Workers will return in May for limited production and then operations will be idled until October.
During that time, GM plans to retool for production of new commercial electric vehicles.
The union advises in October a single shift will be needed which could result in the layoff of approximately 500 employees.
In an update from Local 88, the Inplant Committee advises, “We have begun meeting with the company to find ways to help mitigate these upcoming layoffs and minimize the impact on the membership.
“There’s a lot of information right now that we are looking for: timelines, required to run numbers for one shift in each department, packages, etc.
“It is our goal to have the majority of this information sorted out this week and update the membership by the end of the week.”
