A 24-year-old Stratford resident is facing several charges after a stolen pickup truck was discovered running in a St. Thomas driveway, with the driver slumped over behind the wheel.
St. Thomas Police were called to a residential neighbourhood just north of Talbot Street on Wednesday after a homeowner reported a possible impaired driver in their laneway. When officers arrived, they learned the vehicle had been reported stolen.
To prevent the driver from fleeing, officers deployed tire spikes under the vehicle and conducted a high-risk arrest without incident.
As a result of the investigation, the suspect was charged with theft over $5,000 of a motor vehicle and operation while prohibited under the Criminal Code. A search of the individual also led to further charges of possession of a Schedule I substance (cocaine), two counts of failing to comply with a probation order, and two counts of failing to comply with a release order.
Before the vehicle was towed, police conducted an inventory search and found a replica handgun in the center console.
The accused was taken to police headquarters for processing and was held in custody for a court appearance.
