Aylmer Police are warning residents to be cautious when using Facebook Marketplace following a recent uptick in scam complaints.
Over the past two weeks, the Aylmer Police Service has received several reports of people being defrauded after sending deposits to sellers they did not know.
Victims often never hear from the seller again, resulting in financial loss.
Police are urging users to avoid sending money upfront without verifying the legitimacy of the seller and the product.
It’s recommend to arrange in-person meetings in safe, public spaces such as the Aylmer Police Service “Safe Internet Exchange Zone” located outside the station and remain vigilant for red flags such as unusually low prices or sellers requesting deposits before a meeting.
Anyone who believes they have been a victim of a scam is encouraged to report the incident.
