A ground-breaking ceremony is scheduled for this afternoon (Wednesday) at the site of the city’s long-awaited new animal services shelter.
In January of this year, Tonda Construction Limited of London submitted the lowest bid at just over $4 million.
That’s one million dollars higher than the original tender bid of $3 million in March, 2023.
At that time the project budget was just under $2 million.
In April 2022, members of city council were thrilled with the announcement of a $1 million donation from Sara Teare to kick off fundraising efforts for the animal services shelter.
Teare previously donated $500,000 for the naming rights at 1Password Park.
In June 2022, it was announced the city had awarded the architectural proposal for the new shelter to a+LiNK Architecture of London, one of whose founding members is St. Thomas resident Ed van der Maarel.
Wednesday’s ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. on the east side of Bill Martyn Parkway at Southdale Line.
