A new skateboard repair stand is now available to visitors of the St. Thomas Skate Park, thanks to a donation from the Community Action Network for Children and Youth Elgin.
The organization, dedicated to supporting local youth, had been brainstorming ways to increase youth engagement and promote active recreation across St. Thomas and Elgin County.
Network Chair, Myles Proulx, explains that the idea to purchase the new addition came after seeing the success of the bike repair stand at the St. Thomas Public Library.
The stand itself includes various tools for skateboard maintenance notes Proulx, with options for other riders as well.
Proulx expressed hope that local skaters will take pride in the stand, but noted they have planned to handle upkeep if any damage occurs.
The City of St. Thomas supported the initiative, with Jeff Black, Manager of Recreation, overseeing the installation.
This project is one of several Community Action Network initiatives, with a plan of pursuing federal funding for the implementation of the Icelandic Model of Substance Prevention, a data-driven approach to reducing youth substance use.
Proulx notes that their voices are essential in shaping how we address the challenges they face.
Further details on this will be shared as plans progress. To learn more about the Community Action Network for Children and Youth Elgin- click here.
