A 25% surcharge on electricity to the U.S. may not be in effect right now – but Ontario’s Premier says that it isn’t off the table.
Premier Doug Ford is keeping a potential electricity surcharge on U.S. exports as a bargaining tool but says he won’t act now to avoid escalating trade tensions.
The move follows discussions with U.S. officials, which Ford says he wants to see continue to move forward with negotiations.
After meeting with stateside officials, Ford says he aims to avoid trade conflicts while ensuring Canada secures exemptions from upcoming U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, and lumber.
