A provincial election is set to take place in Ontario on February 27th, giving residents the chance to cast their vote to help shape the future of Elgin-Middlesex-London and the province.
As we prepare to make our informed decision, myFM is giving a look back at our local riding’s history.
The riding of Elgin-Middlesex-London was first introduced to the region in 1999, created during the redistribution of Elgin and parts of Middlesex and London South.
Voters are drawn from Aylmer, Bayham, Central Elgin, Dutton/Dunwich, London, Malahide, North Dorchester, Southwold, St. Thomas, Thames Centre, through to West Elgin.
The riding is home to a strong agricultural sector, thriving small businesses, and a growing tourism industry fueled by its proximity to Lake Erie, its trails, and historic sites. Residents enjoy a mix of country charm and modern amenities, with access to local markets, artisan shops, and recreational opportunities.
Compared to federally where the riding has traditionally been “Blue,” the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives have seen success over the years. That began in 1999 when current St. Thomas Councillor Steve Peters was elected as the Liberal representative. Peters was re-elected in 2003 and 2007 respectively, with Jeff Yurek taking over the roll beginning in 2011 before resigning his Conservative seat in February of 2022. Incumbent Rob Flack of the PC party was elected in June of 2022 and is hoping to return.
At this time, we currently have 6 candidates vying for the seat in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from the Elgin-Middlesex-London riding.
This includes Rob Flack, Progressive Conservative Party; Amanda Stark, Green Party; Doug Mactavish, Liberal Party; Brian Figueiredo, New Blue Ontario Party; Amanda Zavitz, NDP; and Stephen R. Campbell, None of the Above Party.
myFM has been meeting with your candidates and features highlighting their party platforms, local priorities and more are on the way.
