Nicholas Lemke, the driver of a pick-up truck who struck and killed an 11-year-old St. Thomas youngster was sentenced today (Friday) to a six-year prison term.
Just before 5 p.m. on July 11, 2023, Aiden Curtis was struck and killed by an out-of-control pick-up truck that veered off Talbot Street at Inkerman Street and plowed into a group of pedestrians.
A woman was taken to hospital in London with potentially life-threatening injuries. Three other individuals were not seriously injured.
Lemke, who was 19 at the time, was initially charged with impaired operation causing death, impaired operation causing bodily harm and operation while impaired.
In September of that year, he was additionally charged with dangerous operation causing death, impaired operation causing bodily harm, and two counts of dangerous operation causing bodily harm.
The Crown had sought a sentence of six to eight years in prison for impaired operation causing death and a 10-year driving ban after prison.
