Almost two years ago, a proposal to plant two hundred trees on the Port Stanley berm as a bicentennial project was approved by members of Central Elgin council.
In effect, a mini Carolinian forest overlooking Little Beach.
Nancy Moore spoke with myFM about the progress of this project.
Partners in the project include the students and staff of Kettle Creek Public School, the Elgin-St. Thomas Community Foundation, the Municipality of Central Elgin, and the Environmental Impact Committee of the the Port Stanley Village Association.
Donations from the community valued at $205,000 have been raised for the project, and approximately $95,000 of that money has gone toward preparing the area for the planting of the trees.
Sixty Carolinian trees were planted in November 2024, and more will be planted in this spring and fall.
The next steps in the project are to arrange sources and delivery of approved soil.
For now, the health and growth of the original sixty trees will continue to be monitored, and updates will continue to be communicated.
An official community celebration will be held later this year.
