Extendicare has announced it will rebuild its Port Stanley long-term care home as part of a program to redevelop every facility in its network.
The new home will feature four self-contained resident communities, with each offering dedicated dining rooms, activity spaces and communal lounges.
Elgin-Middlesex-London MPP Rob Flack was on hand for the announcement Friday in Port Stanley.
The new long-term care home is to be built behind the existing Extendicare facility.
The project is possible thanks to a provincial construction subsidy.
Flack calls the province-wide program, “a resounding success.”
The new home will offer professional nursing, 24-hour personal care, access to a physician, restorative are and palliative care.
Amie Vahrmeyer, Extendicare’s vice-president of long-term care operations called it an exciting milestone in the next phase of Extendicare’s long relationship with seniors and families in Port Stanley and surrounding area.
She outlined some of the positive elements to be incorporated into the design of the new home.
Resident Alan Legg lives at Extendicare Port Stanley with his wife and observed, “I love music and have quite a collection in my room. I know the new home will have more space to sit together and listen to music together as a group.”
Other features noted include:
• Increased space will improve resident privacy and allow more room for family connections
• All residents will have their own bedroom
• Updated home model will build a stronger sense of community and comfort
• Several outdoor courtyards and visiting spaces accessible for all residents and their families
• Country kitchen and cafe, physiotherapy room, chapel, beauty salon and barber shop
• Resident communities designed to help prevent confusion and responsive behavior triggers for those living with dementia
• Designated Memory Care Community, with innovative wall and door murals, and tailored activities to help residents draw on positive memories and experience sensory therapy
