DeBackere Farms located in Union has been a staple in Elgin County since 1969.
As a second generation family-owned farm, they’re dedicated to growing the highest quality products using innovative techniques, with a commitment to delivering safe top quality produce to their valued customers.
And while that may be what has been growing in their fields for the last 20 years or so, produce wasn’t always the focus shared Dan DeBackere, Owner of DeBackere Farms.
Tobacco was how the DeBackere’s got their start in farming , with Dan’s parents slowly transitioning out of that world and into produce.
Now July through October tend to be their busier months, as beans, cucumbers, field peppers, field tomatoes and sweet corn begin to pop up.
With a number of local markets scattered throughout St. Thomas-Elgin, finding a fresh picked product from DeBackere’s isn’t difficult. This includes at their Farm Market on Sunset Road as well as their stands at Geerlinks Home Hardware and the Horton Farmers Market in St. Thomas.
But you may be buying local without even knowing it as DeBackere’s products can be found at Briwood Farm Market, Loblaws, Metro, and Farm Boy, as well as in your favourite Subway order.
Their wholesale vegetables are also shipped to Smith Fruit, the Toronto Food Terminal and numerous other markets throughout Ontario, Alberta, Quebec and the Eastern USA.
And while it took quite a few years and even more hard work to get them where they are today, it’s the dedication to care and quality that keeps their customers coming back.
