After a day-long search on holiday Monday, the body of a male was recovered from Lake Margaret just after 6 p.m.
Just before 9 on Monday evening, St. Thomas Police identified the victim as 26-year-old Ryan Davies of Port Stanley.
The incident began just before 8 a.m. when St. Thomas Police were notified two men and a woman were in the water after their canoe tipped.
One of the men and the woman were located and taken to hospital in stable condition.
St. Thomas Fire Chief Dave Gregory told myFM the trio had apparently been fishing when the canoe tipped over. It is not believed they were wearing life jackets.
The St. Thomas Fire Department’s water rescue unit was on the scene until 4:30 p.m. when the OPP underwater rescue unit took over.
Coast Guard officials arrived just before noon with sonar and submersible equipment to assist in what became a recovery operation.
Making matters difficult, explained Gregory, was the thick area of weeds under the surface of the water.
Gregory advised at its deepest spot, Lake Margaret has a depth of about 20 feet.
