It’s been an exciting couple of years for the community of West Lorne, having been named the winner of Kraft Hockeyville 2023.
The title brought along a pre-season NHL game in neighbouring St. Thomas last September, along with $250,000 to perform arena upgrades.
This Saturday a significant update is going to be made at the local rink, as the moniker of the West Lorne Arena officially changes to the ‘Bo Horvat Community Centre.’
myFM was able to catch up with Horvat before the big event this Saturday, who recounts the first time he heard about this “incredible honour.”
It’s been a long time coming for all involved as the celebration was originally slatted for July of 2020. With it being a number of years since his last visit and some major renovations done in between, Horvat is looking forward to returning to where it all started.
The Rodney native and current New York Islander grew up playing on a number of local teams before making his way to the NHL, including the West Lorne Comets, Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs, the London Knights, as well as a brief stint with the St. Thomas Stars.
We asked the now 10 year NHL veteran, what it means to have his name and legacy inspiring the next generation of players.
The renaming celebration will be taking place at Miller Park in West Lorne from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday.
Horvat says his wife Holly, their two children and extended family from the area will be on hand to take in the day. It will feature interactive displays, inflatables, entertainment, food vendors and of course the official renaming ceremony.
Horvat hopes that those in the community who come out to celebrate are able to have a great day!
Adding that the celebration will undoubtedly be a “full-circle” moment.
Attendees will have the chance to see Horvat in person, alongside representatives from Hockey Hall Of Fame.
As the hometown boy gets set for year 11 in the National Hockey League, he does still have at least one thing on his bucket list.
The Bo Horvat Community Centre Arena renaming Ceremony will be rain or shine and is open to everyone.
myFM will be live on location throughout the event and we cant wait to help celebrate!
