St. Thomas Police have provided an update to the death investigation currently active in the city.
They say around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, both police and the St. Thomas Fire Department responded to multiple 911 calls in regards to a fire in the area of Hiawatha and Curtis Street.
Upon arrival, a female suffering from life threatening injuries unrelated to the fire was located by crews. She was transported to hospital for treatment but was pronounced deceased as a result of her injuries.
Police note that the fire is being treated as an arson and the death has been ruled a homicide.
The investigation is in the early stages and does remain active.
At this time, the road closure remains in place from Talbot and Hiawatha to Scott and Hiawatha as well as Curtis and Mary to Curtis and Mondamin.
