The first test of the city’s new fireworks bylaw went off without a hitch over the Victoria Day long weekend, advises St. Thomas Fire Chief Dave Gregory.
The second evaluation will come this Canada Day long weekend and Gregory is confident city residents will continue to respect the bylaw and their neighbours.
Earlier this year, city council updated the existing bylaw which allowed for fireworks displays two days prior to and following Victoria Day and Canada Day.
Now it’s limited to one day before and after, resulting in a three-day period, not five notes Gregory.
As per council’s direction, exemptions can also be made for religious or cultural celebrations at the discretion of the St. Thomas Fire Department.
Gregory stressed on the day before and following the two holidays, there is no prescribed time at which fireworks must be discharged.
