Great Lakes Farms on Union Road just north of Port Stanley is well known for its variety of U-pick fruits including apples, strawberries and peaches.
It is also a popular destination for its family fun adventure farm and well-stocked retail outlet.
MaryAnne Van de Gevel’s family have been farming in the area since the 1950’s.
Much has changed over the decades and she talks about the technology now employed for winter pruning the 90 acres of apple orchards.
While it is still time-consuming, Van de Gevel stresses the importance ot pruning at this time of year.
Climate change is also a major consideration her grandparents did not have to worry about seven decades ago when they emigrated from Holland.
The unpredictability of the summer weather has resulted in the farm adding an irrigation system to mitigate extended periods without rain.
With the possibility of a longer growing season, we asked Van de Gevel if that will positively impact the apple orchards.
With the wild fluctuations in temperature and precipitation throughout the year, is it safe to say you still need nerves of steel to farm the land?
Families can enjoy the opportunity to pick their own fresh fruit directly from the farm. During the spring and summer months, when they are in season, visitors can find an abundance of strawberries and peaches available for picking.
