The premise behind Dawn Farm near Belmont is quite simple.
Provide a personal connection with the food on your table that is not found at a grocery store.
And bridging that gap is Abbey Taylor, the seventh generation of her family to work the land in Elgin county.
She explains the inspiration behind her grass-fed beef operation on the family farm.
Taylor explains since she does not have a barn, her 15 or so head of cattle spend the spring and summer in the fields.
As Taylor explains it, her cattle are finished solely on the goodness of grass.
She uses rotational grazing techniques, moving cattle to a fresh paddock every day using portable electric fencing and a rotational water system.
Taylor adds, feel good about buying your beef from a local farmer who is here to answer your questions at any time.
She points out many people are aware of the health benefits of grass-finished cattle. She continues, did you know it also tastes amazing?
From a personal point of view, Taylor observes, “Once I began raising our own beef, my family immediately noticed the difference in flavour.”
Typically she raises Red and Black Angus, Hereford, Shorthorn or a cross of these breeds.
As for down the road, there may be pork in Taylor’s future.
