As part of the celebration for Arbor Day coming up later this month, the City of St. Thomas has announced their second annual Community Tree Giveaway.
Details were shared during last Monday’s city council meeting, where Mayor Joe Preston also announced a special recognition for St. Thomas.
That was Adrienne Lacey Griffin, Supervisor of Parks and Forestry, who updated council on work undertaken this past year to once again receive the distinction.
St. Thomas is now one of 200 cities around the world and is among just 18 in Canada who have been named a Tree City.
The Tree Cities of the World program is a global effort to recognize cities and towns committed to ensuring that their urban forests and trees are properly maintained, sustainably managed, and celebrated.
St. Thomas was selected because of its commitment to meet the following program criteria: establish responsibility for the care of trees, set rules to govern the management of forests and trees, maintain an updated inventory or assessment of local tree resources, allocate resources for a tree management plan, and hold an annual celebration of trees to educate residents.
For St. Thomas, this will include the Community Tree Giveaway which is set to take place on Friday, April 26th notes Lacey Griffin.
This will operate on a first come first served basis, with a one tree per person limit. There will be free mulch on site but residents are asked to bring their own bucket to transport the tree.
The list of available species can be found below…
