Representatives from the city of St. Thomas are on route to Germany today to lead a delegation to advance the gigaplant development initiated by PowerCo- a subsidiary company of Volkswagen.
Mayor Joe Preston, City Manager, Sandra Datars Bere and St. Thomas Economic Development Corporation CEO, Sean Dyke, will meet with the Board of Directors of PowerCo and tour a new electric vehicle battery plant currently being constructed in Salzgitter, a city of approximately 100,000 people in Lower Saxony.
As part of the trip, Mayor Preston will also meet with the Lord Mayor of Salzgitter Frank Klingebeil, with the desire to establish a new and important relationship between the two cities.
Mayor Preston noted “We are so pleased with the level of collaboration and partnership with the team at PowerCo, as well as the support of the provincial government, as we work to establish this landmark industrial development that will support the St. Thomas and the broader region. Having the opportunity to see the development currently underway in Salzgitter gives us a better understanding of what our future will look like here in St. Thomas and to fully appreciate the outstanding opportunity for the residents of our community.”
Earlier this week, the Mayor met with officials from PowerCo Canada Inc., the new Canadian entity that now has responsibility for the St. Thomas gigaplant development.
The trip is set to conclude December 16th.
