Today is National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, which honours the 14 women killed and all those injured 34 years ago at l’Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal.
St. Thomas-Elgin Second Stage Housing once again brought the community together to mark the day and stress the importance of ending gender-based violence.
Jordyn Birrell with St. Thomas-Elgin Second Stage Housing shared the story of the horrific act that took place all those years ago.
He targeted only women that day, taking the lives of 14 promising futures in the process.
14 red roses were laid before the crowd to honour the women whose lives were taken to soon, with a special rose representing all the lives taken since.
The ceremony took place at the CASO Station, bringing together a number of like minded organizations such as Victim Services Elgin, our local first responders, among others.
