It’s a highly visible reminder of the need to help the less fortunate, but not only at this time of year.
The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle campaign officially kicked off Saturday in the parking lot of their Thrift Store on Edward Street.
The Salvation Army was established in St. Thomas in 1883 and they have been serving the community ever since.
This is their only fundraiser of the year and so the six-week campaign is critical, stressed St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston.
The goal for this year’s campaign is $150,000, with the fundraising efforts continuing until Dec. 24.
Capt. Jon Savage noted all of the money raised during the campaign remains in the community to operate their youth, community and outreach programs.
He reminded when you are out and about shopping and you spot one of those familiar Salvation Army red kettles but are only carrying credit or debit cards, you can take advantage of their tip tap options for your donation.
He tells myFM who benefits through the generous donations made at this time of year.
He added food insecurity is a growing concern for the Salvation Army and their mobile outreach vehicle goes out into the community on a weekly basis for those who need a hot meal. Read more about this year’s kettle campaign at stthomastoday.ca.
