It’s being described as “a stunningly beautiful” facility.
Not the language you expect to hear when describing a childcare centre.
However, at the official ribbon-cutting Thursday of Stationview Child Care Centre on St. Catharine Street in St. Thomas, it was immediately evident that Andrew Lockie, CEO of the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario, was not exaggerating.
The facility with room for 88 children has been open for some time but is not at capacity just yet due to the need for additional staff.
“A very momentous occasion,” added Teresa Sulowski, Manager of Children’s Services for the City of St. Thomas.
She pointed out it marked the culmination of hard work, dedication and a shared vision for creating much-needed childcare spaces in St. Thomas and Elgin.
She made note of the partnership between the city and the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario.
St. Thomas Mayor Joe Preston called it a proud moment.
Preston added, ” We can’t grow the economy of the City of St. Thomas if we don’t have great childcare to go with it.”
And he noted the altered face of the area behind city hall.
Preston said the childcare centre is one more step in making the city’s downtown a more productive and active space.
