Cammaert Farms in West Elgin is the classic example of a family farm, familiar to generations of Canadians that, however, is benefitting from modern technology.
Operated by Angela Cammaert and her husband Dave, they are far from average producers.
Their goal is produce all-natural beef, processed at a local, family-owned abattoir.
She stresses, “As Ontario Beef Farmers, we are responsible for producing food for Ontarians using sustainable methods.”
Angela details the operation at Cammaert Farms.
Their Angus-cross herd is known for producing high-quality, well-marbled steaks through a grass- and grain-based diet, feeding families across Southwestern Ontario.
Growing up on farms, Angela and Dave raised their own livestock and so they know a thing or two about food production.
Angela grew up on a cow-calf, cash-crop farm in Lucan-Biddulph before heading into the world of business management prior to returning to farming.
She explains the decision to jump right into beef production, something she calls, “a long game.”
Angela says the decision to become beef producers raised a few family eyebrows when making the announcement.
She adds her 70 to 80 head of cattle are raised the way nature intended, in a stress-free environment, grazing on grass mixtures and assorted grains.
Animal health and well-being are vital to Angela and Dave.
She explains, “Our herd is raised without using hormones or steroids. During processing, the utilization of the entire animal is paramount.
As for the future, expansion is always a possibility although there are factors that need to be addressed.
“Transparency with our clients is of the utmost importance,” she adds.
“Our focus is on sustainability, quality and accountability at Cammaert Farms.”
