Get your sneakers ready as St. Thomas’ premier running race returns to the city next weekend.
The Railway City Road Races are back Sunday, September 24th featuring a half marathon, both a 5 and 10k, as well as a 1km choo choo challenge for the kids.
Proceeds from the race will once again support Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Thomas-Elgin and Executive Director Carolyn Johnson notes they are already blown away by the number of participants.
It’s a jam packed morning of running, with the half marathon set to kick off at 8:30, followed by the 10k at 9, 5k at 9:10 and the choo choo challenge at 10:30. Johnson says that while some races are set up to be more casual, the competition can get very fierce.
In addition to the race, a Wellness Expo featuring 21 vendors will also be set up on site of the Elgin Railway Museum.
Johnson notes they are so honored to be the recipient of Railway City Road Races proceeds as over 60% of the money used to fund their programs comes from local fundraisers. She adds that this will serve as their biggest one of the year, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.
And a big reason for that growing list notes Johnson is continued impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
If you want to make a difference in the lives of our local youth, Johnson says that registering for the race would do just that. She also notes they are currently seeking out a few more volunteers in order to make this event as successful as possible.
If you’re interested, volunteers can reach out to Johnson directly at carolyn.johnsonc@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca or by visiting the Railway City Road Races registration page.
