It’s “The Fundraisers” Day on 94.1 myFM presented by Jackpot Time St. Thomas.
Today we’re shining a light on five individuals or groups who have made a name for themselves through incredible fundraising initiatives that continue to benefit our community.
What started as a simple to way to bring a little joy to a few residents of a long-term care home has wildly exceeded the expectations of Bill and Sherry Marlatt.
The 2022 edition of their Smiles for Seniors gift drive brightened Christmas Day for close to a thousand seniors in St. Thomas and Elgin.
Bill talks to us about the early days prior to adopting the Smiles for Seniors name.
It’s difficult to determine who was more excited about the gift drive this past Christmas. Was it the recipients of gifts or organizers Bill and Sherry Marlatt?
Bill says the reaction to the campaign this past Christmas was – quote – “over the top.”
For the Marlatts, their gift drive quite often delivers the only gift some seniors will receive Christmas morning.
Bill says the reaction he and his wife receive Christmas morning from the staff at the homes makes the effort so worthwhile.
Bill adds gifts are also dropped off to a few seniors living alone in apartments.
He adds the gifts donated by members of the community mean more than they will ever know.
The gift drive grows every year, coming a long way from its early days, notes Bill.
When asked about a memorable moment over the years, Bill immediately recalls one lady in particular.
When she received her gift and Christmas card she finally spoke, acknowledging that yes, someone out there really cares about her.
