Flag raisings are a staple at St. Thomas City Hall.
And the pole where the Autism Awareness flag currently waves was the very spot the movement began back in 2011.
That’s thanks largely in part to St. Thomas resident Shari Bishop, who wanted a way to promote autism awareness and how the developmental disorder can be different from one person to the next.
Well that little tradition she began with her daughters Bailey and Riley all those years ago, marked the first time the Autism Awareness flag was flown in Canada, and is something that continues to this day.
Bishop explains why raising awareness is so important.
Bishop reminds everyone that we don’t always know what others are going through in their own lives and it’s important to reserve judgment.
While she’s so proud that the tradition with her daughters continued this year, Bishop notes the time to past the baton may be coming.
World Autism Awareness Day is recognized on April 2nd.
