In September of 2019, the province announced a new 8-bed residential hospice would be coming to Elgin county with $1.6 million in funding for the St. Joseph’s Health Care Society to open the facility.
Since then numerous area businesses and organizations have donated to the much-needed facility.
The latest coming today (Thursday) when Doug Tarry Homes gifted $500,000.
That was Jennifer Weatherston of Doug Tarry Homes.
In announcing the financial gift, Weatherston affirmed, “We at Doug Tarry Homes are all in.”
Shovels are expected to hit the ground next spring at 2 South Edgeware Road, right above Waterworks Park.
Weatherston noted care will be provided for at least 500 people per year when Hospice for Elgin opens.
Elgin county is the only region in SW Ontario without a hospice.
Hospice of Elgin will provide end-of-life care, while saving essential healthcare dollars.
Work is expected to begin in the spring with construction taking 12 to 14 months.
