For the second time in a month, Ontario police officers are in mourning.
The South Simcoe Police Service says two officers were shot while attending a home in the town of Innisfil, north of Toronto, just before 8 Tuesday night.
St. Thomas Police Chief Chris Herridge calls it “terrible and tragic news again in such a short period of time.”
Exactly one month ago, Toronto Police Constable Andrew Hong was shot and killed while on a break at a Tim Hortons in Mississauga.
Ontario’s police watchdog says the two officers had exchanged gunfire with a 23-year-old man.
The Special Investigations Unit says both officers engaged the suspect while attending a disturbance call.
Herridge calls it a senseless loss of life.
The South Simcoe Police Service the two officers as 33-year-old Constable Devon Northrup and 54-year-old Constable Morgan Russell.
Herridge says stresses police want to protect the public while at the same time keeping themselves safe.
The S-I-U says the 23-year-old man was also killed.
