For its first live event in two years, the Elgin County Heritage Centre honours Wallacetown native Ellis Sifton.
It’s the return of the annual Vimy Lecture this Saturday, the anniversary of the first day of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
Museum curator Michael Baker explains the significance of April 9, 1917.
On his own, Sifton wiped out a German machine gun placement and was posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross.
It will be on display Saturday.
Guest speaker is Dutton-Dunwich historian Blair Ferguson, author of Southwold Remembers: The Fingal Observer, No. 4 Bombing and Gunnery School.
Ferguson visits local high schools, paying tribute to the men and women of the Canadian armed forces and to teach students the importance of keeping the deeds, sacrifices and memories of veterans alive.
This year’s Vimy Lecture is significant in that it hopefully heralds the return of a significant number of visitors to the centre, advises Baker.
The 10th annual Vimy Lecture is 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9 at 460 Sunset Drive.
