For the second time in 24 hours, the St. Thomas Stars have come oh so close to bagging a much-needed victory . This time it was Saturday night in Strathroy where they dropped a 3-2 decision to the Rockets. Friday night it was a 7-6 home loss in OT to London.
After Ryan Marshall sent Strathroy out front in the opening period, Mathieu Paris with a short-handed goal briefly pulled the Stars even.
Riley Wood restored the Rockets’ lead before the end of the first period.
Brandon Balazs potted the winner in the second period with the Stars’ Tyler Alexander cutting the lead in half midway through the final frame.
The two teams were tied for seventh spot in the GOJHL Western Conference prior to puck drop and the win gives the Rockets sole possession.
St. Thomas remains four points up on Sarnia to cling to the final playoff spot.
The Stars are back in action Thursday when they travel to Leamington to tangle with the third-place Flyers. St. Thomas has yet to beat them this season in three attempts.
